About Birkenstock: Birkenstock is a German brand with shoemaking roots going back to 1774. What most people know them for is the shaped cork and latex footbed, which moulds to your foot over time and gives proper arch support with plenty of room at the toes. Many adult styles come in narrow and regular widths, and the range runs from classic Arizona sandals through Boston clogs to closed shoes and boots. Cork, natural latex and jute are still core materials, which is why a well looked-after pair can last for years.
Birkenstock is sized in EU sizes, and the women’s range we stock runs from EU 35 to EU 43. Most women’s styles are made in the narrow fit, so if you have a wider foot look for the regular fit rather than going up a size. The UK number Birkenstock print on the box can be half a size away from the UK size on our website, especially around EU 36, 39 and 40, so go by your EU size where you know it.

Men’s Birkenstock is mostly made in the regular fit, from EU 40 up to EU 48 in our current stock. Take your usual EU size; the footbed is designed to leave a little room at the toe and heel, so a small gap at the front is normal. If you are between sizes, we would usually go down rather than up in open sandals like the Arizona, and stay with your usual size in closed clogs like the Boston.

We find Birkenstock generally true to size in EU, matched to the foot length in our tables. Because they only come in whole sizes, anyone between sizes may need to size up or down depending on foot shape, so the cm measurement is the number to trust.
Narrow is the slimmer footbed and suits a slimmer foot; regular is wider through the ball of the foot and suits a medium to wider foot. The length is identical, so if a pair feels tight across the foot, try the other width before changing size.
Some people with a narrow or low-volume foot do size down, especially between whole EU sizes, but we would not assume that as a rule. If you are between sizes and have a wider foot or higher arch, sizing up or choosing regular width is often the better call.
The cork footbed is firm at first and usually takes a couple of weeks of regular wear to mould properly. We suggest short periods at home with the straps slightly loose at first, then tightening them as the footbed settles.
That is deliberate. Birkenstock designs in roughly 5–10 mm of space at the toes and a little at the heel so your foot sits correctly on the contoured footbed. If your toes touch or hang over the edge, the size or width is wrong.
Keep them dry when you can and let damp pairs air away from direct heat. A cork sealant every few months helps stop the footbed drying out and cracking, and we would brush off loose dirt rather than soaking the footbed.
