Canvas Shoes for Girls

Girls’ canvas shoes are a light option for weekends, clubs and holidays. We fit them from Start-Rite and Clarks. Wide fit canvas shoes for girls are the difficult part: canvas often has no lettered width, so we judge the space across the toes on the foot, not from a label.

Black canvas shoes for girls come up whenever school is mentioned. Bring the uniform list. A canvas shoe is allowed only when that list says so.

What to look for in girls’ canvas

Fit before the print

  • Toes that lie flat, with no pressure at the sides when she stands
  • A fastening that stays done up. Elastic on its own often gapes
  • A heel that does not slip as she walks the shop
  • If she needs a true wide fitting, a lettered leather shoe may be kinder than forcing canvas

When leather is the better call

Canvas copes with a dry day and a short walk. It is less help in the rain, and it rarely comes in the G and H widths some girls need. If the toes spill the upper, look at our shoes for kids with wide feet rather than going up a length to buy width. Extra length lets the heel slip.

Fitting tips from our fitters

  • Measure left and right. The longer foot decides the size. Girls are as uneven as anyone else.
  • Growing room depends on the fastening. Lace and strap canvas can take a fitter’s thumb beyond the toes. A slip-on cannot, or she will walk out of it.
  • Fit the socks she will wear. Party socks and school socks do not take the same space.
  • Watch the little toe. Canvas across the outside of the foot is where a wide foot complains first.
  • Dry them slowly. Paper in the toe, no radiator. A curled sole is the usual end of a soaked pump.

Clarks we fit

Start-Rite is the other brand you will see here most often. The Clarks size and fit guide is worth reading if Clarks is the pair you have in mind, and our girls’ school shoes size and fit guide if the shoes are for uniform.

Frequently asked questions

Are canvas shoes good for your feet?

A canvas shoe that fits can be comfortable for casual wear. It is light and it bends. It will not hold the foot the way a structured leather shoe can, and it is not a treatment for any ache or condition. If something hurts, see a podiatrist, then come back and we will fit around that advice.

Are canvas shoes allowed in school?

Only when your school’s own list allows them. Some accept a plain black canvas shoe with a simple sole. Others want leather, a stated colour, and no logo. Bring the list. If canvas fails it, we will fit a school shoe that passes, from the brands we know.

Are Converse allowed in school?

That is a school decision, and plenty of lists leave them off because of the logo and the toe cap. This collection is Start-Rite and Clarks canvas, not a Converse rail. If the list allows a plain canvas shoe, we will fit one. If it names a trainer we do not have in her width, we will say so.

What if she needs a wider canvas shoe?

We try the pair on and look at the width across the knuckles, not at a number on the box. If the upper is already tight, a wide-fit leather shoe is usually the honest answer. Going up half a size to escape the pinch makes the heel loose, and then she trips.

Come to the shop on Gabriel’s Hill in Maidstone. We will measure both feet and tell you if canvas is the right material at all. For a smarter day, our gold sandals for girls are a different fitting again.
