Hats For Men

Hats for men in the UK, as we fit them, are country caps and simple hats rather than a costume department. Barbour is the bulk of the rail, in green, navy, black and brown. R. M. Williams appears in smaller numbers, and &SONS sits alongside. If you want to buy men’s hats and caps, start here and on our main Hats for Men page, where the wider clothing rail lives.

Stylish hats for men, in this shop, means a cap that suits the coat and sits properly on the head. Fedora hats for men are not a range we keep as standard. Ask on the day if you have a shape in mind, and we will tell you if we have anything close.

Choosing hats for men

Fit before fashion

  • The cap should sit just above the ears, not perched and not swallowing the brow
  • A stiff peak that fights your forehead is the wrong depth, not a bold look
  • Colour follows the coat: olive with waxed cotton, navy with a jersey
  • One good cap beats three that live in the car

Country caps and summer hats

The British hat most men mean is the flat cap. Waxed and tweed caps from Barbour are what we fit through the colder months. Summer hats for men, here, are the lighter cloth caps rather than a straw boater we do not pretend to specialise in. Cap hats for men in a sports shape are a separate shelf. See sports caps for men if that is the peak you wanted.

Fitting tips from our fitters

  • Try it in front of the long mirror. A hat judged from above, in your hands, always looks smaller than it will on your head.
  • Wear the coat. A cap that works with a waxed jacket can look huge with a thin shirt. Bring the jacket, or a picture of it.
  • Check the back as well as the brim. If it gaps at the nape or pinches above the ears, it is the wrong size, not a style you will grow into.
  • Do not size up for hair you might have later. Fit the head you have. A loose cap blows off on Gabriel’s Hill, which is a useful test.
  • Ask us to be blunt. Some shapes suit a long face and mock a round one. We would rather say so in the shop than leave you to discover it in a photograph.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best hat for a 60 year old man?

There is no best hat for a 60 year old man, or for any other age. Head size, the coat, and a peak or a soft crown matter more than the birthday. A plain Barbour cap looks right on a man of 30 and a man of 70 if it fits. We will not steer you towards something twee because of a number.

What type of hats are in style right now?

Flat caps and simple baseball caps are the ones men actually wear out of this shop. Waxed caps stay, because the weather stays. Trends on a phone move faster than a good cap wears out, so we buy what our customers keep, not what a single season shouts about. If you want the best hats for men in the sense of a headline, you will have a calmer time letting us put three caps on your head.

What is a British man’s hat called?

The one people mean is the flat cap, sometimes a tweed cap. A trilby is a different hat, with a pinched crown and a brim all round, and we would not call it the same thing. A beanie is knitwear. When someone asks for a British man’s hat in the shop, we start with flat caps and go from there.

How can a man look good in a hat?

Wear one that fits, in a colour already in the coat, and take it off indoors. The brim should shade the eye without hiding the face. If you have never worn a hat, try two shapes and keep the one you forget you have on. That forgetfulness is the fit working. A hat you adjust every minute is the wrong size or the wrong style.

Hats are tried on, not guessed from a photograph. We are on Gabriel’s Hill in Maidstone, and it takes a few minutes to see whether a cap suits you. The wider rail is on our Hats for Men page.
