Waterproof Shoes For Men

Waterproof shoes for men in the UK have to survive more than a dash to the car. We fit walking and everyday pairs from Meindl, Merrell, Ecco, Hoka, On, Panama Jack, Dubarry and Timberland. The wider rail, including boots, is our men’s waterproof footwear page.

Waterproof and water resistant are not the same claim. A waterproof shoe is built to keep rain out on a proper walk. A water resistant shoe shrugs off a shower, then wets through if you stand in a puddle. A waterproof shoes for men sale, or a men’s waterproof shoes clearance, is only the reduced sizes left on the sale page.

Choosing waterproof shoes for men

Read the label with us

  • Waterproof: a membrane or sealed construction meant for prolonged wet
  • Water resistant: light rain and wet grass, not a soaked afternoon
  • Neither helps if water comes in over the collar or through an open tongue
  • Leather that has never been fed will not stay weatherproof by magic

Walking shoes and lighter pairs

Walking waterproof shoes for men are the Meindl and Merrell end of the rail, with a sole that grips and a throat that keeps spray out. Lightweight waterproof shoes for men are more often Hoka, On or a lighter Ecco, and they trade a little ruggedness for less weight. Town leather from Panama Jack or Dubarry can be a different promise again. We will read the ticket rather than let the word “waterproof” on a web menu do the work.

Fitting tips from our fitters

  • Wear the sock you walk in. A walking sock plus a membrane can feel like a size less.
  • Lace to the top. An unlaced collar is a funnel. The fit includes how you do them up.
  • Walk until you feel the toe. A waterproof lining that is too short rubs in a way a dry fitting hides.
  • Say what the wet actually is. A school run in drizzle and a chalk path in January are different shoes.
  • Ask about care. Dirt on the outer fabric stops a membrane breathing. Our shoe care shelf has the cleaner the maker expects.
  • If you wanted a trainer, say so. Those sit on waterproof trainers for men, and the fit is not the same as a walking shoe.

Frequently asked questions

Which waterproof shoes are best?

None are best for every man. Walking waterproof shoes want grip and a gusseted tongue. A commute wants something you can wear with trousers without looking equipped for a ridge. Meindl and Merrell are where we start for paths. Ecco and Panama Jack are where we start for town. Your route decides, then the fit does.

Is water resistant the same as waterproof in shoes?

No. Water resistant means the upper sheds a shower for a while. Waterproof means the shoe is constructed to keep water out for longer, usually with a membrane inside or with sealed seams. Both fail if the water level rises above the collar, and a tired, dirty shoe does less than it did when it was new. If the label only says water resistant, we will not talk it up.

Do waterproof shoes exist?

They do. You can buy a shoe that keeps a wet path out for a normal walk, and we fit those makers. They are not submarines. A flooded pavement, a split membrane or a tongue you left open will still wet your feet. That limit is why we ask how you will use them before we bring a pair out.

How do waterproof shoes work?

Most use a thin membrane that lets moisture from the foot escape as vapour and blocks liquid water coming the other way. Others rely on leather, seam sealing and a treatment you renew. The outer material can still darken in rain. That is the surface wetting, not proof the inside has failed. If the sock is wet, then it has failed, and we want to know.

The Maidstone shop is on Gabriel’s Hill. Tell us about the commute or the long walk you have in mind, and we will fit the shoe on the sock you actually wear. The full family of boots and shoes is on our men’s waterproof footwear page.
