About Crockett & Jones: Crockett & Jones was started in Northampton in 1879 by James Crockett and Charles Jones, and the shoes are still made there. These five are from the men’s Main Collection, all on an E fitting, which is their standard width. They are Goodyear welted, with a leather lining and their City rubber sole.
We have five men’s styles in just now, from UK 7 to UK 12, every one of them an E fitting. The Connaught 2 (20106A) is a straight-cap Oxford in dark brown burnished calf, on last 379. The Westbourne (25152A) is a punched-cap Oxford in dark brown calf suede, on the square-toe last 348. The Chelsea 8 (25887A) is on last 341, in chestnut burnished calf and in a dark brown repello suede that is tanned to resist water. The Upton (20191A) is a plain chukka in dark oak suede, on the same last 379 as the Connaught. All five use the City rubber sole, made in England by the Harboro Rubber Co.
Looking after them
Polish the burnished calf regularly so the leather stays fed. Brush suede when it is dry. The dark brown Chelsea is repello suede, treated in the tannage, and Crockett & Jones still ask you to keep up the suede care. The Upton suede is water and stain repellent in ordinary use. Use shoe trees, and let them rest between wears.
Crockett & Jones’s standard width. They liken it to an F fitting from many other Northampton makers. F and G are their wider fittings.
The foot-shaped form the shoe is made on. Last 341 is a medium round toe and fits true to size. Last 348 is a longer square toe. Last 379 is a shorter round toe, still true to size.
Their rubber sole, made by Harboro in England. It has the look of a leather sole, with more grip in the wet.
On the three lasts we have in stock, yes. Last 341 (Chelsea 8) and last 379 (Connaught 2 and Upton) are true to size in your usual UK size. Last 348 (Westbourne) fits in the same way through the heel and ball, but the square toe is cut long, so extra room at the front is the shape, not a sign that you need a smaller size.
Order by UK. Their sizes follow standard UK measurements, and the UK number on our site is the UK on the shoe. From UK 9.5 the EU number we show is higher than the EU on a Crockett & Jones size chart. Use the foot length column, which is their centimetre figure for that UK size.
No. All five are E, the standard Crockett & Jones width. If you usually take an F from another English maker, their E is often the closer match. If you need a genuine wide fitting, they do make F and G in other styles, and we do not have these five in those widths.
A pair that is the right size should be comfortable when you first put it on. The leather will mould, but it will not grow into a size that is too small. Toes should not touch the end, and you should not get a finger down behind the heel. A little slip at the heel is normal until they have been worn in.
The dark brown Chelsea 8 is repello suede, proofed in the tannage against water and oil. That proofing stays in the skin, and they still recommend ordinary suede care on top. Brush it when dry, and keep a suede protector going. Do not polish it like the burnished calf.
