About Joseph Cheaney & Sons: Joseph Cheaney founded his shoemaking business in Desborough, Northamptonshire in 1886; his sons joined later and the company became J. Cheaney & Sons. It is best known for Goodyear-welted brogues, oxfords and boots, all cut and made at the same Desborough factory. The firm kept busy supplying boots in the First World War and later won Queen’s Awards for export. Unlike many rivals, Cheaney still closes every upper in England rather than outsourcing production abroad.

Joseph Cheaney & Sons fit & sizing tips

  • True to size, English lasts. Cheaney shoes are made on traditional English lasts and generally fit true to size for a medium to slightly wider foot.
  • Goodyear welted, so they take a proper break-in. The leather soles and welted construction mean new pairs benefit from a few short wears before a long day out.
  • Room to resole. Because they are Goodyear welted, Cheaneys can be resoled multiple times, so it is worth getting the initial fit right rather than sizing for a quick break-in.
  • Our take. A proper English-made shoe built to last decades if looked after. Worth the investment if you want something that improves with age.

Joseph Cheaney & Sons Men’s Shoes

Joseph Cheaney & Sons men’s shoes are Goodyear-welted in Northamptonshire and sized in UK sizes. They generally come up true to size, and the leather lining and cork filling mould to your foot over the first few weeks, so a new pair should feel snug rather than tight. We stock from UK 7 (EU 41) to UK 12 (EU 47), including half sizes.

A style of shoe decorated with perforated (broguing) patterns along the seams, originally a Scottish and Irish outdoor shoe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Joseph Cheaney shoes run true to size?

Most Cheaney brogues, oxfords and boots fit true to UK size on their English lasts, though the shape varies by last number. If you are between sizes or have a narrow foot, we would always try them on or ask us before ordering.

What does F fitting mean on Cheaney shoes?

F is Cheaney’s standard width on most men’s styles, roughly an average UK width. Some lasts, such as the 125 and 11028, run a touch more generous in the ball and instep, so the last matters as much as the size on the box.

How long does it take to break in Cheaney leather soles?

Cheaney recommend wearing new pairs little and often at first, starting with short walks around the house. The Goodyear-welted leather soles stiffen before they soften, and most customers find they settle within a few wears rather than needing weeks of discomfort.

Can Joseph Cheaney shoes be resoled?

Yes. Goodyear-welted Cheaneys are built to be resoled, which is why we encourage getting the fit right from the start. Cheaney offer their own refurbishment service, and any good cobbler can replace a leather or Dainite sole when the time comes.

Do Cheaney loafers fit differently from brogues?

Cheaney themselves advise going half a size down on loafers and monk straps, because the foot sits lower without laces and the leather can give a little with wear. Brogues and lace-up oxfords are usually true to size.

How should I care for Joseph Cheaney leather shoes?

Brush off dry dirt after each wear, use a cream polish matched to the leather, and keep them on shoe trees so the shape holds. Let them dry naturally between wears, and go easy on wet pavements until a new leather sole has bedded in.
