You’ve booked your shoe fitting appointment, so why not make a day of it? Once your children are measured, fitted and ready for the new school year, stay a little longer and enjoy the town. From family attractions and beautiful parks to independent places to eat and very good coffee, there is plenty to discover in and around Maidstone.
For the easiest access to The Golden Boot we recommend The Mall multi-storey car park, sat nav postcode ME15 6AT. Once inside The Mall, make your way to the ground floor, go down the escalators and walk straight out through the doors. The Golden Boot is directly on your right.
Fremlin Walk has its own town-centre car park at the other end of the High Street, sat nav postcode ME14 1PS. Handy if you are starting your day at the museum or Brenchley Gardens end of town.
Maidstone Borough Council runs a number of other car parks around the town, several of them a short and level walk from the shop. Charges and opening times are set by the operator, so please check before you travel.
Everything below sits within an easy walk of the shop, apart from Kent Life, which is a short drive out towards Aylesford and well worth the trip if you have the afternoon free.
Unit 40, Royal Star Arcade
A brilliant option for younger children. Little Street is an imaginative role-play experience where little ones can run the shop, the surgery or the garage and make up their own adventures. Sessions run to a timetable and suit children from walking age to about seven, so it is worth booking around your fitting.
Unit 34, Royal Star Arcade
For children who love making things, art-K Maidstone runs weekly art classes alongside holiday and half-term workshops. The projects are built to let children develop creatively at their own pace, which makes it a lovely hands-on addition to a day in town.
Fremlin Walk, Earl Street
For something more energetic, Activate combines physical activity with interactive technology. Families move between fast-paced game rooms, tackling challenges that test teamwork, speed, agility and problem solving. Maidstone is the first Activate venue in Kent.
St Faith’s Street, near Fremlin Walk
A great choice for a slower-paced family visit. The museum brings together art, local history, archaeology and natural history under one roof, and runs family activities and special events through the year. Do check the What’s On listings before you visit to see what is happening in the school holidays.
Earl Street
Right in the heart of Maidstone, the Hazlitt brings live performance into a town-centre day out. The programme takes in plays, music, comedy and family productions, and the live What’s On page makes it easy to see whether a show fits around your fitting appointment.
River Medway
See Maidstone from a completely different angle. The family-run Kentish Lady runs scenic cruises on the Medway, including one-hour return trips between Maidstone and Allington on selected dates, plus longer cruises and special experiences. Sailings are seasonal and most are booked by telephone, so check the live timetable before you travel.
60-61 High Street
A short stroll along the High Street, Prison Island packs several family adventures under one roof: team challenge cells, prison-themed adventure golf, AR darts and shuffleboard. It is an easy booking to make around a fitting if the children still have energy to burn.

A short drive from the town centre, Kent Life turns a shoe-fitting appointment into a proper day out. It brings together family play, farmyard and nature experiences, a vintage village, Kentish gardens, creative activities and a changing programme of events through the season.
If the sun is out, Maidstone has green space in every direction, from a five-minute stroll beside the museum to a proper afternoon in one of the borough’s best-loved parks.

One of Maidstone’s best-loved green spaces and an ideal spot for a family walk, a picnic or a chance for the children to burn off some energy after shopping. The large open landscape makes it an easy make-a-day-of-it option when the weather is kind.

Set on the site of the old Maidstone Zoo, Cobtree has marked walks, play areas, picnic benches, a sculpture trail, a café, toilets and baby-changing facilities. A particularly good choice for families who want outdoor time and a proper playground in the same visit.
Next to Maidstone Museum
A useful town-centre green space when you would rather not get back in the car. Brenchley Gardens sits beside the museum and has mature planting, statues and a Victorian bandstand, which makes it ideal for a short stroll or a breather between activities.

Market Buildings
An independently owned, French-inspired bistro and one of our favourite places for lunch in Maidstone. A great choice if you would like to turn the shoe-shopping trip into a proper family day out. Its sister site, Maison Frédéric, sits a couple of minutes away on Earl Street.
Earl Street
For authentic Spanish flavours and tapas, head to La Taberna in the historic Corpus Christi Hall at 51 Earl Street. It is a characterful independent restaurant and a lovely option for sharing plates together.
26 Lower Stone Street
Very close to The Golden Boot, Vesuvius specialises in traditional Southern Italian cooking, including pizza, pasta, seafood and meat dishes, with many ingredients sourced from Italy or from local suppliers.
If everyone wants something different, Earl Street gives families a broad choice of familiar high-street restaurants alongside Maidstone independents, all within an easy walk of the town centre.
Royal Star Arcade
Maidstone has plenty of coffee shops, but one of our favourites is Eden in the Royal Star Arcade. It is an independent café and sandwich bar serving breakfast, lunch, coffee and cold drinks, to eat in or take away. Eden uses fresh, locally supplied ingredients and offers vegan and vegetarian choices, which makes it an ideal pause in a busy Back to School day.
The Golden Boot is marked with our boot. Town-centre destinations are within an easy walk of the shop, and the ones marked as a short drive are worth the extra few minutes in the car. Use the Show on map button on any card above to bring that destination into view.
