Matching Bag and Shoes for Wedding

Matching bag and shoes for a wedding guest is a calmer outfit when the shoe is chosen first and the bag follows the colour. An identical pair is less important than a shared black, taupe, cream, blue or metallic.

Comfortable matching bag and shoes for a wedding still start with the fit. Matching bag and shoes for a wedding in a low heel are what we suggest when the day runs long. Gabor, our own Golden Boot label, Wonders and Hispanitas are the names you will see most, and the colours in front of us are mostly black, with taupe, blue, burgundy, pink and cream.

Choosing a matching bag and shoes

Match the colour, then stop

Shoes and a bag do not have to be the same object in two sizes. The same colour family is enough: black with black, taupe with taupe, or a gold shoe with a gold clasp on a quieter bag. One step of metal or colour in common is what reads as a set. Three different brights, or gold shoes with a silver bag, split the outfit.

When you cannot wear heels

  • Fit a smart flat or a low heel before you look at the bag
  • Keep the bag in that same colour so the outfit still looks deliberate
  • A neat toe and a good leather do more than extra height
  • A fascinator needs only one colour in common with the shoe or the bag

Fitting tips from our fitters

  • Shoe first. A matched pair that hurts is the wrong match. We will not talk you into it.
  • Black is the simple guest formula. It is also the colour we have most of on this page.
  • Bring a scrap of the dress. Taupe, cream and blush are close until they are side by side.
  • Low heel for a long day. Afternoon into evening is where a small heel earns its place.
  • Check the bag in the hand. A clutch you cannot hold, or a strap that slips, is as awkward as a tight shoe.

Gabor shoes to match

Gabor is the largest shoe brand in this shortlist. Our Golden Boot label, Hispanitas, Waldlaufer and Josef Seibel are here too, and Gianni Conti appears in small numbers. The Gabor size and fit guide helps with the shoe. We will put the bag next to it once the fit is right.

Frequently asked questions

Should shoes and handbag match for a wedding?

They do not have to match stitch for stitch. Guests look pulled together when the shoe and the bag share a colour or a metal. Identical is optional.

Should you match your shoes to your bag? Keep them in the same colour family, and let the dress carry anything brighter.

How do you pair shoes with a bag?

Choose the shoe for the heel and the fit, then a bag in that colour or in a metal the shoe already uses. Do it in that order so comfort is not bargained away for a set.

Lay them together in daylight. Shop lighting makes taupe, grey and cream look more alike than they will outdoors.

Should shoes, bag and fascinator match for a wedding?

Not exactly. One shared colour between the hat and either the shoe or the bag is plenty. Echoing all three in the same bright shade can look costume-like.

A neutral shoe and bag, with the fascinator picking up a colour from the dress, is the combination that usually works.

What shoes to wear to a wedding if you cannot wear heels?

A smart flat, a low wedge or a low heel sandal, fitted properly, in a colour that agrees with the bag. You can look classy without heels. Height is not what makes a guest outfit formal. A clean toe, tidy leather and a bag in the same colour do that work.

If heels are painful, tell us. We will stick to fit, and suggest a podiatrist where there is a medical question.

Do you have a low heel that matches a bag?

That is the request behind most of this page. We will fit the low heel first, in black, taupe, cream, pink or burgundy as the outfit needs, then look for a bag that sits with it.

Bring a swatch to Gabriel’s Hill in Maidstone and we will set the shoe and the bag side by side. Mother of the bride outfits have their own page, matching shoes and bags for mother of the bride, and guests who want pink can see pink matching shoes and bags.
