About Meindl: Meindl is a Bavarian family bootmaker, still run by the Meindl family in Kirchanschöring, with a tradition going back to 1683. We stock their walking and hiking boots for proper hill days, from lighter trail shoes to sturdier leather boots, with Gore-Tex linings on many GTX styles. Different models are built on slim, medium or wide lasts, and the Comfort Fit range offers extra room through the forefoot if you need it.
Meindl women’s walking boots and shoes are made in Germany in UK sizes, including half sizes, and generally come up true to size. Allow for the walking socks you plan to wear, and try them on later in the day when your feet are at their largest. The Comfort fit styles are cut wider through the forefoot. We stock from UK 3.5 (EU 36.5) to UK 8 (EU 42).
Meindl men’s walking boots and shoes are made in Germany in UK sizes, including half sizes, and generally come up true to size. Allow for the walking socks you plan to wear, and leave about a finger’s width at the toe for downhill walking. The Comfort fit styles are cut wider through the forefoot. We stock from UK 6.5 (EU 40) to UK 12 (EU 47).
Meindl’s wide-fitting range, with more room through the toe box and forefoot while keeping a snug hold at the heel. Worth a look if standard widths feel tight.
A breathable, waterproof membrane fitted inside Meindl boots to keep feet dry without trapping moisture.
A hard-wearing, high-grip rubber sole made by the Italian specialist Vibram, used on Meindl’s walking and hiking ranges.
We find most Meindl styles true to UK size if you match your foot length to the chart, but fit varies by model and last. Some Comfort Fit styles feel generous and can run half a size roomy, so we would always try them on with your walking socks before a long day out.
Choose a Comfort Fit or wide-last model rather than going up a full size. Meindl is generally a generous brand anyway, and sizing up mainly adds length without giving you the right shape through the forefoot.
Meindl’s own guidance is about 1 cm of space at the toe when you are standing, checked with a finger down the back of the boot. That room matters most walking downhill, and you should account for the hiking socks you will actually wear.
Leather Meindl boots usually need a few shorter local walks before a long trek, especially the stiffer trekking styles. Comfort Fit models and softer walking boots tend to settle in more quickly, but we still would not take a brand-new pair straight up a Munro without wearing them in first.
GTX in the style name means a Gore-Tex lining, which is waterproof and breathable when the boots are cared for and the membrane stays intact. Looked-after Meindl GTX boots serve most walkers very well in wet British conditions.
Yes, in most cases, provided the leather and lining are still sound. Meindl soles are hard-wearing, and when they do wear out you can return them to us or send them to one of their recognised UK repairers for a resole.
