Oxford brogues for men are a closed-lace shoe with punching along the seams. The oxford is the shape. The brogue is the decoration. We fit them from Loake, Ecco, Clarks, Joseph Cheaney, Crockett & Jones and Jeffery West, mostly in black and brown, with tan behind them.
An oxford brogues sale is the reduced sizes on our men’s shoes sale page. Oxford brogues for women are a smaller part of what we fit. If that is the search, ask us, and have a look at Hispanitas while you are here. This page is built around men’s pairs.
An oxford closes the lacing under the vamp, so the throat is neat and the shoe looks formal. A derby leaves the lacing open, which is easier on a high instep and a touch less strict. Brogue shoes are punched, whether the lacing is closed or open. A full brogue has the wingtip, a semi-brogue punches the toe cap, and a quarter brogue only nicks the seams.
Crockett & Jones and Ecco are charted here: Crockett & Jones size and fit, Ecco size and fit.
They are not rivals. Oxford describes the closed lacing. Brogue describes the holes punched in the leather. An oxford can be plain, with no punching at all, and a brogue can be made as a derby. Oxford brogues men’s styles in this shop are the closed-lace shoe with some punching, which is what most British weddings and offices mean by the name.
Yes, unless the invitation says black tie or gives another rule. Black oxford brogues are the safe pair with a dark suit. Brown is right for a daytime or country wedding. Leave the tan pair for the lunch before, not the aisle. If you are still unsure, our wedding shoes notes are worth ten minutes, and we fit the shoe in the shop.
Wear a plain black oxford when the occasion is strict. Wear oxford brogues when you want that same formality with a little pattern: the office, a wedding guest, a dinner that is not black tie. Open-lacing derby brogues are the weekend and the country suit. Heavy country boots are a different page.
Now and then, not as a full ladies’ oxford department. Hispanitas is the women’s name most likely to appear beside this collection. Ask the fitters what is in stock rather than assuming the men’s last will do.
Our fitters are on Gabriel’s Hill in Maidstone. A brogue should be tried with the suit, or with a clear photograph of it, so the colour is decided in the room and not in the car park afterwards.
