About Schöffel: Schöffel was founded in Bavaria in 1804 and is still run by the same family. Schöffel Country is their British arm, based in Oakham in Rutland. We stock the gilets (including the Oakham and Lyndon), fleeces, jackets, shirts, knitwear and trousers. They are the pieces our customers reach for on shooting days, dog walks and weekends in the country.
Schöffel fit & sizing tips
- Three men’s scales. A plain 40 on a fleece or jacket is a 40 inch chest. A 15.5 is a shirt collar. A size written as 34 inch is a trouser waist. Do not treat them as the same thing.
- Fleeces come up large. Schöffel say most coats and fleeces are cut larger than a normal chest size. For the men’s Oakham gilet we usually suggest one chest size down if you want a neat fit over a shirt.
- Women’s Lyndon. The Lyndon gilet can come up small. We often suggest a size up, particularly if you want a knit underneath.
- Shirts. Classic fit is cut wider than tailored fit at the same collar. If you want the slimmer shape, Schöffel say many people take one collar size down and leave the top button open.
- Uk8 on our list is a UK 8. Women’s fleeces are stored that way. The bust measurements are in the table.
Schöffel Women’s Clothing
Women’s fleeces, including the Lyndon gilet, the Burley and the Tilton, are sized as Uk6, Uk8 and so on. That is a UK dress size: Uk10 is a UK 10. The St Issey sweatshirt in a plain 14 is the same UK 14. Bust and waist are Schöffel’s outerwear measurements. The newsboy cap in small and medium follows their hat chart (small 55 to 56 cm, medium 57 to 58 cm). The Lyndon is the one we often size up.

Schöffel Men’s Clothing
A plain chest size, 34 up to 54, is the chest in inches on fleeces, gilets and jackets such as the Oakham, Berkeley and Carron. Schöffel say these come up larger than a normal chest size, and for the Oakham we usually take one size down for a neat fit over a shirt. Collar sizes 15 to 18.5 are shirts: classic fit measures about 2 inches more in the chest than tailored fit at the same collar, so the table gives the collar only. Sizes written with the word inch are trouser waists. A 32 on its own is the Harlech short, a 32 inch waist, and the same short in 36 is a waist even though 36 on a fleece is a chest. S to 3XL are polos, tees and knits. Socks marked 7–11 are a UK shoe size (US 8–12, EU 39–45). The Pentire hoodie in XS is not on that polo chart, so try it against a small.

Glossary
Venturi membrane
Schöffel’s waterproof, windproof and breathable lining, used in coats rather than in a fleece gilet. Check the product page, because a fleece on its own is not waterproof.
Chest size
How men’s coats and fleeces are sized, in inches. The size is the chest it is cut to fit, and Schöffel say most of these run larger than a normal chest size.
Classic and tailored
Shirt fits at the same collar size. Classic is the roomier body. Tailored is narrower through the chest, shoulder and sleeve.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Schöffel clothing true to size?
Match the chart and it is. The two exceptions we see most are the men’s Oakham fleece gilet, which runs generous, and the women’s Lyndon gilet, which can come up slightly small.
Should I size down in the men’s Oakham?
For a neat fit over a shirt, yes, one chest size down from your usual. Schöffel say coats and fleeces are cut larger than a normal chest size, and the Oakham is the one we notice it on most. If you want it over a thick knit, stay with your usual chest size.
Does the women’s Lyndon come up small?
It can. We often suggest a size up, especially if you are between sizes or want room for a knit underneath.
How do I tell a chest size from a collar or a waist?
Men’s 34 to 54 without the word inch are chest sizes. 15 to 18.5 are shirt collars. Anything with the word inch, and the 32 on the Harlech short, is a waist. Women’s Uk8, Uk10 and the rest are UK dress sizes.
Are the waterproof coats fully waterproof?
Coats with a Venturi lining are rated waterproof and windproof as well as breathable. A fleece gilet is not. Check the product page for the lining before you rely on it in heavy rain.
