About Barbour: Barbour has been making waxed cotton in South Shields since 1894, and we have sold it for years. In stock just now are men’s and women’s boots and wellingtons, waxed jackets such as the Beaufort and Beadnell, shirts, gilets and knitwear, waxed flat caps, and a small run of dog coats.
Women’s Barbour with us is mostly wellingtons: the Bede, Tempest, Banbury, Cynthia and Dena, plus a few slippers. They come up true to size. Use your usual UK size, and the foot length below if you are between sizes. Barbour’s own chart pairs UK 7 with EU 40 and UK 8 with EU 41, while our filters show EU 41 and EU 42, so ignore the EU number if the two disagree.

Men’s stock is wellingtons and boots, including the Tempest, the Matfen chelsea wellington and the Farsley boot, plus slippers. Take your usual UK size. On Barbour’s chart UK 6 is EU 40 and UK 10 is EU 44; our filters show EU 39 and EU 45 for those two, so order by the UK size. If you wear a thick sock in a wellington, try the next size up.

Dress sizes 8 to 16, and letter sizes S to XL. On Barbour’s chart S is a UK 10, M a 12, L a 14 and XL a 16, with the chest and waist below. Waxed jackets such as the Beadnell are cut with room for a layer: add 4 to 6 inches to your own chest if you want a knit underneath. The only XS on the site at the moment is a dog coat, so it is on the dog chart rather than here.
Read the size before you read the chest column. A number such as 40 on a Beaufort or Border is the jacket chest in inches, and Barbour suggest that number should be 4 to 6 inches above your body chest so you can layer. S, M, L and so on are body measurements for shirts, gilets and knits: S is a chest of 91 to 96 cm. Cap rows are head sizes, not chest sizes. A few dog coats share a letter with the shirts; use the dog chart for those. XXXL is not on the Barbour chart we have, so ask us for its measurements.
These letter sizes are Barbour’s dog coat scale, not a person’s S, M or L. Measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and across the middle of the back. The breed names are only a guide. An XS, for a toy dog, is 25 cm neck to tail and 23.7 cm across the middle; that size is on the quilted coat rather than in this table.
| Size (site) | Neck to tail (cm) | Mid width (cm) | Breed (guide) | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | 35.2 | 29.7 | Terrier | |
| M | 45.5 | 37.7 | Spaniel | |
| L | 55.6 | 46.5 | Retriever | |
| XL | 65.8 | 55.3 | Pointer |
Waxed jacket care
Brush dried mud off, then wipe the jacket with cold water. No detergent. Hang it somewhere cool to dry, and keep it off radiators. Once a year, or when the water stops beading, rewax with Barbour Thornproof dressing: work it in with a cloth, warm it so it sinks into the cotton, then brush off the excess once it is cool. Barbour’s own film of the job is at the top of this page. We keep a Thornproof dressing and a jacket care kit if you want the proper tin.
Wellington care
Wipe mud off with a damp cloth and dry them naturally. Do not use solvents or detergent, and do not fold the tops down or leave them on a hot car seat. Barbour wellingtons contain natural rubber latex.
Cotton proofed with wax. It is windproof and showers run off it. It needs rewaxing as the finish wears.
Barbour’s wax for reproofing a waxed jacket. Warm it in, then brush off the surplus.
On a Beaufort or Border, the number on the label is the chest the jacket is cut to, in inches. It should sit above your body measurement so a layer fits underneath.
The old cap scale. A 7 is a head of about 57 cm, and each eighth of a size is about another centimetre.
Yes, in a UK size. Take the size you usually wear, and go up one if you will wear a thick sock in a wellington. Where our EU number does not match Barbour’s chart, trust the UK size.
Measure the fullest part of your chest, then add 4 to 6 inches. A 40 inch chest usually wants a 44 or a 46 in a waxed jacket. Letter sizes on shirts and gilets are different: they match the body chest on the chart, not the jacket number.
Run a tape around your head, just above the eyebrows and ears. A size 7 is about 57 cm, 7½ is about 61 cm. If you are between fractions, take the larger one.
Cold water and a cloth, then air dry. Rewax with Thornproof dressing when the rain stops beading, which for most people is about once a year. The film at the top of this page is Barbour’s own method.
They are rubber wellingtons, so yes, they are made to keep water out. Let them dry away from heat, and do not clean them with detergent or solvent.
