About Bigjigs: Everything we stock under Bigjigs is Bigjigs Rail: wooden engines, wagons and small trains, including the Heritage Collection. They are toys, so the size that matters is the age on the box, not a UK shoe size.

Bigjigs fit & sizing tips

  • 3 years and over. Bigjigs Rail’s own guidance is that the wooden railway is for children aged 3 and up. The sets include small pieces, which is why they are not for under-3s. That applies to the engines and wagons we have, from the Flying Scotsman and Mallard to the bulldozer low loader and the tractor.
  • They are one size, and they join together. Magnetic couplings click onto other Bigjigs Rail engines and carriages. Bigjigs also says the track and stock work with most other major wooden railway brands, so a new wagon does not need a new set.
  • Heritage engines are models, not a bigger toy. The Flying Scotsman, Mallard, Rocket and Eisenhower are licensed replicas with a short history on the box. They are still 3-plus wooden toys, not display models for a toddler to teeth on.
  • A few pieces include a little track. The freight train, CN train, car loader, Sweetland Express and tractor come with a couple of track pieces or a mini track. They are add-ons. They are not a full layout.
  • Wipe, don’t soak. A damp cloth is enough. Keep them out of a dishwasher and out of the bath.

Glossary

3+

Suitable from 3 years. Not suitable under 3, because of small wooden parts.

Magnetic coupling

The magnet on each end that lets an engine pick up a wagon. This is how Bigjigs Rail pieces join, including to other wooden railway brands.

Heritage Collection

Wooden replicas of real locomotives, including Flying Scotsman, Mallard and Rocket, licensed from the National Railway Museum.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age are these Bigjigs toys for?

3 years and over. Bigjigs Rail says wooden railway is for children of 3 and up, because of the small pieces. We would not give this range to a younger toddler.

Will they fit a railway we already own?

Yes if it is Bigjigs Rail, and yes with most other major wooden railway brands. The couplings are magnetic, so an engine from us will pick up a wagon you already have.

Are the famous engines a different size or age?

No. Flying Scotsman, Mallard, Rocket and Eisenhower are the same 3-plus wooden toys, just modelled on a real locomotive. The Flying Scotsman we sell is a small engine and tender, not a ride-on.

Do they come with a full track set?

No. A few include two pieces of track, a buffer or a short mini track. If you want a layout, you need a train set as well. These are the extra engines and wagons.
