About Salt Water Sandals: Salt Water Sandals is the classic American double-buckle sandal, first made in a St Louis workshop in 1944. The leather uppers are treated to cope with sea water (hence the name), and we find them a proper summer staple for children and adults alike. Sizes use Salt-Water’s own scale, which does not always match the UK number stamped on the sole. Their website has separate charts for women, children and youth.
This is Salt-Water’s own children’s chart for the Original, including the youth sizes at the end of the run. They ask you not to buy a larger sandal to make it last, because the Original is already roomy, and other styles on their site can use a slightly different chart. Which sizes we can offer comes and goes with stock.

Yes. The leather straps are coated with a water-resistant sealant and the buckles are rust-proof, so they are meant for splashing, paddling and beach days. We hand-wash ours with cool water and a mild detergent when they need freshening up.
No. Salt Water Sandals are already roomy, especially the Original, and an oversized pair is a tripping hazard. Size by foot length in cm and allow only a normal thumb’s width of growing room at the toe.
Salt-Water uses its own sizing scale. The number stamped on the sole is the Salt-Water size, which often runs one step ahead of the UK equivalent (a UK 5 can arrive with a 6 on the sole). Match your foot length on the chart for that style on their website.
If they feel firm at first, pop them on and stand in cool water for a few minutes, then let them air dry on the feet. The leather moulds to the foot, which is how the brand intends you to wear them in.
The Original is a comfortably wide sandal, and the double buckles let you adjust across the instep and ankle. Narrower styles such as the Swimmer or Shark fit differently, so check the style notes if your child has a very narrow or wide foot.
Hand-wash in cool water with a gentle detergent and leave them to air dry flat. Avoid leather protectors or stiff brushes, as these can damage the waterproof sealant on the leather.
