About Stetson: Stetson is the American hat maker behind the original cowboy hat, founded by John B. Stetson in 1865. We stock their felt hats and caps, from trilbies and fedoras to western styles, made with the traditional craftsmanship the brand has built its name on.

Stetson fit & sizing tips

  • Sized by head circumference, not shoe size. Stetson hats are sized to your head measurement in inches or centimetres, so measure around the fullest part of your head before choosing.
  • New felt hats can feel snug. Wool and fur felt hats loosen slightly with wear as the felt relaxes to the shape of your head.
  • Between sizes? Go up, not down. Stetson’s own advice is to choose the larger size if you fall between two measurements. You can always add a little padding behind the sweatband to snug it up.
  • Our take. Get measured properly if you can. A well-fitted Stetson should feel secure without pinching.

Stetson Hats

This is Stetson’s own hat chart, by head circumference. Measure where the hat will sit, about 1/8 inch above the ear, and if you fall between sizes they say take the larger one and pad the sweatband if it needs to sit snugger. Sizes on our site come and go with stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my head for a Stetson hat?

Wrap a soft tape measure around your head where the hat will sit, across the middle of your forehead and about 3 mm above your ears. Hold it firm but not tight, and note the measurement in centimetres. If you do not have a tape, use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler afterwards.

What if I am between two hat sizes?

Choose the larger size. Stetson hats can be snugged up with a little padding behind the leather sweatband, but a hat that is too small will pinch and is much harder to fix. That is the advice on Stetson’s own size chart, and it matches what we see in the shop.

What is the difference between wool felt and fur felt?

Wool felt is made from sheep’s wool and is the more affordable option. It is perfectly good for everyday wear and we stock woolfelt trilbies for that reason. Fur felt, usually rabbit or beaver, is denser, holds its shape better and copes with light rain more readily, which is why it costs more and lasts longer with regular wear.

How should a Stetson hat fit?

Snug enough that a light breeze will not lift it off, but not so tight that it leaves a mark or gives you a headache. You should be able to wear it comfortably for a few hours without thinking about it. If it sits too high on your head or shifts when you nod, try the next size down or ask us about sweatband padding.

How do I care for my Stetson hat?

Brush dust off with a soft hat brush, working counter-clockwise from the left side. Store it upside down on the crown or on a hat rack so the brim keeps its shape. If it gets wet, shake off the excess water and let it dry at room temperature away from radiators or direct sun. Handle it by the brim rather than pinching the crown.
