Black trainers for school

Our black trainers for school are for pupils whose uniform policy allows a trainer on an ordinary school day. They need to be plain enough to pass that rule, and fitted so a long day between classroom and playground does not end in a blister.

If the list asks for black shoes for girls’ school in leather, rather than a trainer, we will say so and look at a proper school shoe instead. Bring the wording. Skechers, Geox, Clarks and others are in the mix, and not every pair is black leather.

What to look for in black trainers for school

Black leather trainers for school

Say if you need black leather trainers for school. A lot of trainers are textile or a mix, and a coated fabric can look like leather under shop lights. We will tell you what the pair in your hand is made of. A plain black upper, a quiet sole and a lace you can tighten are what strict lists usually mean.

Uniform first, then the fit

  • Read the line that mentions trainers before you choose a colour
  • Logos, white soles and bright details are the usual reason a pair is sent home
  • Blue and grey trainers in the wider selection suit some PE lists, and fail a black-only rule
  • Hoka and On Running are cushioned options when the school has not banned that look

Fitting tips from our fitters

  • Measure left and right. We fit the longer foot. The shorter one can live with a little extra room.
  • Lace them as they will be worn. A trainer with a loose heel is not doing a school day’s work.
  • Growing room is a thumb, on a lace-up. A whole size bigger leaves a shoe they will kick off. A slip-on trainer is fitted closer still.
  • Socks they walk to school in. Sports socks and thin school socks are different fittings.
  • Crouch as well as walk. Children spend half the day folded into a chair. Toes should not hit the end when they do.
  • Keep PE as a separate pair. An everyday black trainer and a games trainer wear out differently, and the rules are often different too.

Frequently asked questions

Can kids wear black trainers as school shoes?

Only when that school says so. Some lists accept a plain black trainer as the everyday shoe. Others keep trainers for PE and want leather in the classroom. We fit to the policy you bring, and we would rather turn a pair down in the shop than have it refused at the gate.

Are trainers allowed in school?

There is no single answer across Kent schools. Primary, secondary and games lessons often use three different rules. If trainers are only for sport, look at our PE trainers for school and keep a leather shoe for the uniform.

Are trainers good for kids’ feet?

A trainer fitted to the larger foot, with a secure heel and space for the toes, may be comfortable for an active day. That is a fitting result. It is a poor substitute for medical advice. If a child is in pain, or a podiatrist has already written something down, bring that note and we will fit around it.

Do you buy kids shoes a size bigger?

We fit the larger foot as it measures today. On a lace-up we leave about a fitter’s thumb of growing room, and on a slip-on we leave less, or the shoe slides off. A whole size bigger is empty length. It is a common reason new shoes are off their feet by break.

Bring the uniform sheet to the shop on Gabriel’s Hill in Maidstone. We will read it with you, measure both feet, and use the school trainers and PE shoes size and fit guide if you want the detail before you come.
