Socks For Dr Martens

A new Dr Martens boot stays stiff until the leather eases, and a thin sock is a common reason the heel rubs. We keep cushioned socks that stay up inside the shaft, from Dr Martens when they are in, and from Feetures, Pantherella and Swole Panda the rest of the time.

Ladies’ socks for Dr Martens and men’s lengths sit in the same conversation. Try the thickness you mean to wear before you decide the boot is the wrong size.

Choosing socks that survive a stiff boot

What to look for

  • A leg long enough to sit above the collar, so the sock does not vanish
  • Cushioning under the heel and around the toes while the boot is new
  • A fit that does not wrinkle hard under the foot
  • A finer sock later, once the leather has softened and a thick pair feels clumsy

Breaking in, then afterwards

Dr Martens socks for breaking in are a thicker, padded pair, worn for short walks while the stiff leather eases. Feetures are the cushioned socks we suggest for that stage. Pantherella and Swole Panda suit once the boot has given, if you want a finer sock. Padded Dr Martens socks, when we have the brand’s own pair, are the other route. Women and men need the same idea, in the right sock size.

Fitting tips from our fitters

  • Fit the boot in the sock. A size chosen in a thin dress sock will feel smaller once you switch to a padded one. Decide the sock first.
  • Cover the collar. The top of a Doc can rub bare skin. A crew or mid-calf length stays between leather and ankle.
  • Break them in slowly. An hour or two at home, then a short walk. Soaking boots, or baking them, damages the leather. We do not recommend either.
  • Come back if they still bite. A better sock helps a correct size. It will not fix a boot that is too short or too narrow.
  • Keep the skin intact. A blister plaster is first aid, not a fitting. Broken skin is a matter for a pharmacist or your GP.
  • Read the size guide. Dr Martens do not all come up alike. Our Dr Martens size and fit guide is the place to start.

Dr Martens socks

People ask us for the best socks for Dr Martens. The honest answer is the pair that stays up, cushions the heel and matches the size you were fitted in. If you want a Dr Martens socks 3 pack, or Double Doc socks, ask what has come in, because those small lines change. See also Pantherella and Swole Panda.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of socks to wear with Martens?

A crew or mid-calf sock with some cushioning, especially in a new boot. It should sit smoothly, without a thick fold under the heel. Once the leather has eased, a finer sock is often enough, and many people prefer it.

Should I wear socks with Dr. Martens?

Yes. Bare feet slip, blister and leave the lining damp. The boot is built to be worn with a sock, and the size should be chosen with that sock on. Leather against skin is also a poor way to soften a new pair.

What socks are good for docs?

Cushioned Feetures socks while the boot is still rigid, then Pantherella or Swole Panda if you want a neater everyday sock. Dr Martens’ own socks are worth asking for when they are on the shelf. Match the sock size to your foot, not to the boot size printed on the box.

How do I protect my feet from Doc Martens?

Start with the right size and a cushioned sock, then wear the boots for short periods until the stiff points give. A heel that slips, or toes that touch the end, is a fit problem, so bring them back. We would rather change the size than have you pad a boot that was never right.

Try the boots with the sock at our shop on Gabriel’s Hill in Maidstone. A walk on the floor tells you more than a chart. The Dr Martens brand page shows the boots themselves.
