About Dasco: Dasco is the shoe-care range of Dunkelman & Son. Shoe care started in 1950, and the firm has worked from Desborough, Northamptonshire, since 1969. We stock the polishes, brushes, laces, shoe horns and insoles, and this page is the care guide for them.
Dasco fit & sizing tips
- Full-length insoles take your UK shoe size. Order the size printed in the shoe you want them for. ladies’ foam insoles are in stock in UK 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 and can be trimmed. men’s foam insoles run from adult UK 7 to UK 12. leather insoles are in stock from UK 3 to UK 12, and lambswool insoles in UK 4, 6, 7 and 8.
- Children’s sizes are not adult sizes. children’s cork insoles run from infant UK 7 to adult UK 5. After 13 the next sizes are 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. children’s foam insoles run from infant UK 7 to junior UK 2 (13, then 1 and 2). An infant 8 is a small child’s shoe. An adult 8 is not.
- Half insoles use small, medium and large. From the labels on foam half insoles and leather half insoles: small is adult UK 2–3, medium UK 4–5, large UK 6–7. The foam half is toeless, so it suits a peep toe. The leather half cushions the ball of the foot. The small wooden stretcher is also tagged Small. The large stretcher has no size in the table.
- Laces are sold by length, not shoe size. We keep flat and round laces around 45, 60 and 75 cm, sport laces at 100 and 180 cm, round laces at 120 cm and hiking laces at 140 cm. Count the eyelets rather than matching a shoe size.
- Test, then let them dry. Try any cleaner or polish on a hidden spot first. Stuff wet shoes with paper and keep them off the radiator.
Dasco Half Insoles
Small, medium and large are Dasco’s adult half insoles, which sit under the ball of the foot. Use this table for foam half insoles and leather half insoles. Full-length insoles, including the children’s cork insoles and men’s foam insoles, come in the UK shoe size you already take.

Dasco shoe care
Match the product to the upper. A little, often, beats soaking a shoe the week before you need it.
- Smooth leather. Brush off the dry dirt, wipe with a damp cloth, then work in leather conditioner if the leather feels dry. cream polish goes on thinly with a cloth or brush, in the colour closest to the shoe. Leave it, then buff. Finish with protector spray if you want a barrier against wet pavements and stains.
- Suede and nubuck. Brush the nap while it is dry. Use suede and nubuck cleaners rather than cream polish, which will flatten the nap. Brush again once the cleaner has dried.
- Waxed and oiled leather. Use the waxed and oiled cream or spray, not a high-shine cream, or you will change the look of the leather.
- Patent. Patent gloss on a soft cloth. Cream polish is for ordinary smooth leather, not a mirror finish.
- Canvas, mesh and textile. Brush, wipe with a barely damp cloth, and let them air dry. Protector spray once they are dry helps the next shower.
Shoe horns (including the 43 cm metal horn) and wooden stretchers are fitting tools, not a size. Kids’ shoe labels are one size. Velour toe puffs are in small and medium only.
Glossary
Half insole
A forefoot pad, not a full footbed. Ours are sized small, medium and large for adult UK 2–3, 4–5 and 6–7.
Infant and junior sizes
Children’s UK sizing runs up to 13, then starts again at 1. Infant 8 and adult 8 are different feet.
Protector
A spray that helps water and stains sit on the surface. It is not a substitute for cleaning dried mud off first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Dasco insole size do I order?
For a full-length insole, the UK size of the shoe it is going into. For a half insole, small is adult UK 2–3, medium UK 4–5 and large UK 6–7.
Why is there no table of UK sizes 3 to 12?
Those insoles are already labelled with the shoe size. Children’s and adult ranges share numbers such as 8 on the website, so a single conversion table would mix an infant shoe with an adult one. Open the product name and match the size you wear in that shoe.
Can I cut a foam insole down?
Yes. The ladies’, men’s and children’s foam insoles are made to be trimmed. Cork, leather and lambswool are better left at the size you bought.
What should I use on suede?
A suede brush and the suede and nubuck cleaner or shampoo. Keep cream polish and patent gloss for smooth leather.
How long are the laces?
They are sold by centimetres: about 45, 60 and 75 cm for everyday shoes, 100 and 180 cm sport laces, 120 cm round laces and 140 cm hiking laces. Pick the length from the number of eyelets.
