School Shoes For Teen Boys

School shoes for teen boys are a leather fitting once the primary shoe has been outgrown and the secondary list is still strict. We measure both feet in school socks, fit the larger one, and seat older boys in the men’s department when that is the calmer place to do it.

Start-Rite and Clarks are the brands we fit most often, with Geox, Ricosta, Bobux, Primigi, Kickers and the occasional Dr Martens. Nearly all of them are black. Weekend trainers are a different page.

Choosing leather school shoes for boys

What leather needs to do

  • Match the colour on the list, which for most of these boys is black
  • Be leather if the policy says leather, checked on the pair
  • Fasten with a lace or a strap while he is still growing
  • Take a polish and a wet playground without collapsing by half term

Children’s sizes and men’s sizes

Some boys’ school shoes go up to a UK size 12, so we look in the children’s range and the men’s range. A size that only exists in a men’s casual shoe may still fail the school list. We will say so. If the feet are wide, a roomier shape may be more comfortable, and our shoes for kids with wide feet page is there when that is the whole problem.

Fitting tips from our fitters

  • School socks, both feet. We fit the longer foot. Thin dress socks and sports socks give two different results.
  • From the mid-teens, try the men’s department. He can be measured there, with the same care, once children’s sizes feel like a younger shop.
  • Growing room is a thumb on a lace-up. A slip-on is fitted closer, because spare length becomes slip once the leather gives.
  • Soften a firm heel in the shop. Come back if it is still stiff after a few wears. Firmer leather does this, and it is normal.
  • Wear them at home after a summer in trainers. The first day should not be the first meeting between the foot and a proper shoe.
  • Undo the laces to take them off. Kicking the heel down breaks the back long before the sole is done.

Frequently asked questions

Are these only black leather?

Leather school shoes for boys in this collection are mostly black, because that is what the lists we are shown ask for. Brown is a separate search, on our brown school shoes page, and only where the school names brown. If the policy says leather, we check the material on the pair rather than assuming it.

Can a teen boy be fitted in the men’s department?

Yes. Older boys are often more comfortable there, and some school shoes reach a UK size 12, which may live in the men’s range. We still measure both feet and fit the larger one. A men’s shoe aimed at the office can be too sleek, or too heavy, for a school that wants a plain lace-up. We will compare it with the list.

How much growing room at 14 or 15?

About a fitter’s thumb on a lace or a strap, fitted to the longer foot, if he is still growing. Less on a slip-on. By the later teens the spurt slows, and we fit closer to the foot he has, with enough ease to walk. A whole size extra is how shoes get left in a locker.

What if he refuses leather?

Then we read the uniform policy together. Some schools allow a plain black trainer as the everyday shoe, and many do not. Trainers he actually likes for the weekend sit with popular shoes for teen boys. This page stays with the school leather.

Older boys can be fitted in the men’s department on Gabriel’s Hill in Maidstone. Bring school socks and the uniform list. The school shoes for teenage boys size and fit guide is the longer version of how we measure.
