Boot Slippers for Men

A boot slipper earns its name with the sole. We look for men’s slipper boots with a hard sole so you can wear them indoors and then step out to the car, the bins or the pavement without changing shoes.

That is a different job from a warm slipper boot that stays by the bed. If warmth and a boot shape are what you want, see our slipper boots for men. Here the question is the sole, and whether it will take a doorstep.

What to look for in boot slippers for men

A sole for indoors and out

  • A hard sole that keeps grit out, not a soft foam that soaks up the step
  • Enough grip for a short walk, and a heel that does not slip as you leave carpet for stone
  • Leather boot slippers for men hold their shape better than a soft fabric mule on that walk
  • A side zip, if your instep is high, so you are not forcing a low opening

Who they suit

They suit a man who wants one pair for the house and the few steps outside it. They are not a hiking boot, and they are not a lined house boot meant only for warmth. Nordikas, Shepherd of Sweden, Barbour, Pitas and Birkenstock are the names in this collection. The best boot slippers for men are the ones whose sole matches the ground you actually cross, which is why we would rather you walk our floor than trust a photograph.

Fitting tips from our fitters

  • Press the sole. You want it firm enough for gravel, not spongy.
  • Walk both floors. Carpet, then the hard shop floor. The heel should stay put.
  • Ask which are leather. We will show you today’s leather pairs rather than promise every upper is hide.
  • Bring house socks. The thickness you wear at home, not a thin shopping sock.
  • Mention a high instep. Men’s slipper boots with a zip are the easier opening. Ask which current pairs have one.
  • Fit the larger foot. A slipper that is snug in the shop is tight by the evening.

Pitas

Nordikas is the name you will see most of. Pitas, Barbour and Shepherd of Sweden are here too. See the Pitas size and fit guide and the Shepherd of Sweden size and fit guide. For a warm boot shape rather than a hard sole, use the slipper boots page.

Frequently asked questions

Do men’s boot slippers come with a hard sole?

That is the point of this page. Men’s slipper boots with a hard sole in the UK, as we fit them, are for indoor and outdoor steps: the kitchen, then the doorstep, the car or a short pavement. Press the sole in the shop. If it feels like a soft house mule, it belongs on the other page, with the warmer slipper boots.

Are leather ones suitable outside?

Leather is the upper we prefer when the slipper will leave the house, because it holds its shape and copes with a short walk better than a loose fabric. The sole still does the outdoor work. A leather upper on a soft sole is a house slipper. Ask us to show you the sole, not only the hide.

Do you have men’s slipper boots with a zip?

Some pairs do, and some do not. A zip is there to open the ankle for a higher instep, not as decoration. We will show you which of the current boot slippers have one. If none of them do, we will say so, and we will try a wider opening instead of forcing a foot in.

How are these different from slipper boots?

Boot slippers, here, are about a hard sole and indoor and outdoor use. Slipper boots are about warmth and a boot silhouette, and they are mostly for the house. If you are cold in the evening and you are not going outside, you want the other page. If you are nipping out in the same shoes you wore to put the kettle on, you want this one.

The shop on Gabriel’s Hill in Maidstone is the place to test a hard sole on carpet and on a hard floor. We will measure both feet and tell you if a pair is only fit for indoors.
