Shoes For Toddlers

Toddler shoes for girls and toddler shoes for boys start when they need to walk outside, often somewhere around 12–18 months and sometimes earlier or later. Age is a weak guide. The foot is the guide. A first-shoe fitting in the shop is how we choose the pair.

Before you visit, read our size and fit guide, then the brand chart if you already have one in mind. The Bobux size and fit guide and the Clarks size and fit guide are the two we send people to most often.

Choosing shoes for toddlers

What a first shoe needs

  • A sole that bends in the hand, so the foot can still feel the ground
  • A strap or a lace that stays done up. Toddlers remove slip-ons
  • A rounded toe with room for the toes to spread
  • A light upper. Heavy fashion shoes fight a new walker

Brands we fit

There is no single best brand. Bobux, Start-Rite, Ricosta and Clarks toddler shoes are the names we fit most often, with Geox a little later. The right pair matches the foot that day. A chart helps you prepare. It does not replace the measure.

Fitting tips from our fitters

  • Measure both feet, every time. Fit to the larger foot. The smaller one still has to sit properly, not swim.
  • A thumb of growing room on straps and laces. About a fitter’s thumb beyond the longest toe. Do not add that spare length to a slip-on, or the shoe will come off.
  • Come later in the day. Feet are slightly bigger then, which is a fairer picture.
  • Bring the socks you will use. A thick sock can steal the growing room you just allowed.
  • Read the guide, then visit. Our size and fit guides explain the systems. The first-shoe fitting still happens here.
  • Refit often. A pair that was right in spring can be short by summer.

Bobux we fit

Bobux is where many first shoes here begin. Compare the Bobux size and fit guide with the Clarks and Geox guides. None of them gives a size from an age.

Frequently asked questions

What brand of shoes are best for toddlers?

None is best for every child. Bobux, Start-Rite, Ricosta and Clarks are the ones we reach for most, because the shapes suit small feet and the soles flex. A famous name in the wrong length is still a poor shoe. If you have been looking at Next toddler shoes, treat that size as a note and let us measure.

What type of shoes should a 2 year old wear?

Usually a light shoe with a soft sole, a rounded toe, and a strap or lace that stays fastened. A toddler trainer is fine at two when it bends easily and holds the heel. Stiff boots and heavy fashion soles can wait. We will say if a pair in the collection is too much shoe for that stage.

Is a 5 year old a toddler in shoes?

In footwear, five is past the toddler stage. First shoes cover the early walking years. By five, most children are in an ordinary children’s fitting, still measured with the same care. If you are unsure which side of that line you are on, bring them in and we will use the foot, not the birthday.

What shoe size is a 3 year old?

There is no single size. Children of the same age can be sizes apart, and a growth spurt makes a chart even less useful. We measure both feet in centimetres. Ordering the old size plus one is a guess.

When do baby shoes at 12–18 months make sense?

Many children first need a proper outdoor shoe between 12 and 18 months, once they are walking off the carpet. Some are earlier and some are still cruising. Indoor slippers and Crocs are not that shoe. If you want a clog for play later, our dinosaur Crocs for toddlers are a separate conversation.

Come to Gabriel’s Hill in Maidstone for a first-shoe fitting. We will measure both feet and choose for this stage, not from an age. A good fit may be more comfortable. It is not a treatment, and any pain belongs with a podiatrist or your health visitor.
