Trainer For Boys

A trainer for a boy has to hold the heel, bend under the ball of the foot, and still have room once he has worn it for an afternoon. We fit Skechers, Geox, Clarks and Primigi as a matter of course, and Hoka or On Running when the last suits an older boy.

Boys black trainers and boys velcro trainers are the two requests we hear most, especially once school or a club has a colour rule. Bring that rule with you.

What to look for in a boys’ trainer

Fastening and sole

  • Velcro that crosses the instep and does not pop open when he kicks
  • Laces only if he can tie them, or if you are happy to tie them every morning
  • A sole that bends at the forefoot. A stiff trainer is tiring on a child
  • A heel tab you can actually get hold of, so the shoe goes on without crushing the back

School, sport, or both

A black trainer that passes for PE may still be banned as everyday uniform. Read the list before you fall for a colour. Our notes on black trainers for school and the school trainers and PE shoes size and fit guide are the place to start. Older boys who want something less childish can look at popular shoes for teen boys.

Fitting tips from our fitters

  • Measure both feet in the afternoon. The larger foot sets the size. Feet are bigger later in the day, which is when he will be wearing the trainer.
  • Thumb room on lace and Velcro trainers. Leave about a fitter’s thumb past the longest toe. Skip that spare room on a slip-on trainer or the heel will lift.
  • Bring his sports socks. A trainer fitted on a thin sock is tight the first time he wears games socks.
  • Check Hoka and On Running for age. Some pairs that look right are an older last. We will say if a shoe is really for a teenager rather than a younger boy.
  • Do not inherit a size from a sports shop. Their measurement is a clue. We remeasure.

Skechers we fit

Geox boys trainers and Skechers are the names families ask for first. Read the Skechers size and fit guide and the Geox size and fit guide, then let us put the shoe on the foot. Primigi and Clarks sit in the same fitting.

Frequently asked questions

Are Velcro trainers only for younger boys?

No. Boys velcro trainers are a practical choice at any age when laces come undone in the playground. The strap still has to hold the instep, and we check it does not gape over a high instep. Laces are better only when they stay tied.

Will a black trainer pass at school?

Sometimes for PE, sometimes for uniform, often for neither. Logos, white soles and mesh panels are the usual sticking points. Check your school policy and, if you can, bring a photo of an approved pair. We fit inside the rule rather than argue with it.

What about Sports Direct boys trainers?

Sports Direct boys trainers come up in a lot of searches. A large sports shop is one place to look, and it is not a fitting. If you were given a size there, bring it as a note and we will measure again. Skechers, Geox, Clarks and Primigi are the brands we would rather try on him properly.

Is the boys trainers sale worth a look?

Reduced children’s shoes are gathered on our children’s shoes sale page, which is where a boys trainers sale search tends to land. The same fitting rules apply. A reduced trainer that is short in November is a waste by Christmas.

Come to Gabriel’s Hill in Maidstone and we will measure both feet, in the socks he actually wears. If the shoe is for school, bring the list and we will keep you inside it.
