PE Trainers for School

PE trainers for school have a different job from the shoes they wear to lessons. Games need a lace that locks the heel, a sole with grip, and whatever colour your PE kit list actually names. In this selection that is often blue or black, with some grey and white.

Leather school shoes stay in the changing room. Bring the kit list, and the sports socks, and our fitters in Maidstone will match the pair to the lesson rather than to the uniform photo.

Choosing PE trainers for school

What a games trainer needs

  • A lace or a strap that holds the foot when they turn
  • Cushion under the heel for a hard hall or a playground
  • A tread you can see, suited to indoor, outdoor, or both
  • The colour on the kit list, which is often black, white or a single plain colour

Who we fit them for

Skechers and Geox cover most of the school PE fittings we do, with Primigi, Clarks and Start-Rite alongside. Hoka and On Running are there for pupils who want more cushion, when the school has left the style open. Ask us which sole suits the surface they actually play on.

Fitting tips from our fitters

  • Bring the PE kit list. Indoor and outdoor are often two different shoes, and we cannot guess the banned colours.
  • Fit in sports socks, later in the day if you can. Feet are slightly larger after school than at breakfast.
  • We measure each foot. The larger one sets the size. Growing room is about a thumb on a lace-up, and less on anything that slips on.
  • A running last can work for PE. It still has to lock the heel. A soft fashion trainer that folds in the middle will not.
  • Check the sole with us. A pale indoor sole and a deep outdoor tread are different tools. One pair sometimes has to do both, and we will say if it can.
  • Replace them when the grip goes smooth. A tidy upper with a bald sole is how slips happen in a hall.

Frequently asked questions

What trainers are good for PE?

A lace-up with cushion, a heel that stays put, and a sole that grips the surface on the kit list. Skechers, Geox, Clarks and Primigi are the sorts of school trainer we fit most weeks. Hoka and On Running suit pupils who want a deeper cushion, if the school allows that shape.

Can kids wear trainers for PE?

Yes. PE is done in trainers, not in leather school shoes, in almost every list we are shown. The argument is about colour, sole and how plain the upper must be. Your own PE kit list is the one we follow.

What shoes are not allowed in PE?

Schools commonly turn away backless shoes, heavy boots, and anything with a marking sole in the hall. Your list may be stricter. Bring it. We would rather rule a pair out on Gabriel’s Hill than have it left in the changing room.

Are plimsolls ok for PE?

A few schools still want a plain pump for indoors. Most of the PE we fit now asks for a proper trainer with grip and support. Tell us which line is on your list and we will say whether a plimsoll is enough or whether it will be refused.

Are running shoes good for PE?

A running shoe can be a sound PE trainer when the school allows that shape and the foot is locked in. It is a clumsy everyday school shoe if the uniform asks for leather. Fit the running shoe for games, and keep the classroom pair as its own fitting. If a child is in pain beyond ordinary tiredness, a podiatrist is the right next person.

If you are coming into Maidstone, bring the PE list to the shop on Gabriel’s Hill. The school trainers and PE shoes size and fit guide is there if you want to read ahead, and everyday black styles sit on our black trainers for school page.
