Clean leather, either a Chelsea ankle or a slim knee boot, is what looks right in our shop at the moment. We would rather fit a boot you will still like in three winters than chase a heel that is only news this month. Holland Cooper and Hispanitas are useful places to start.
They do when the boot is the quieter piece. Let the dress lead, and let the leather echo a bag or a coat rather than fight it. An ankle works with a shorter hem. A knee boot needs a hem that clears the topline or covers it on purpose. Walk a few steps so we can see the line.
A Chelsea is an ankle boot with elastic side panels and no laces, so it slips on. The elastic should hold the ankle without leaving a mark. Not every luxury boot is a Chelsea. If that is the shape you want, say so and we will see which current pairs are cut that way.
Keep the rest simple: a coat, a dress or a good trouser, and a heel you can forget about. Designer flat boots are the elegant choice for a day on your feet.
