Canvas is light, it bends, and it is an easy shoe for a casual day. We fit boys canvas shoes from Start-Rite and Clarks, including black canvas shoes for boys when that colour is in. A size 4 is a common ask, and it is not the same length in every brand.
Canvas is a poor guess for a first shoe, and it is not automatically a school shoe. Bring the uniform list if school is the reason for the visit.

Usually they are not the first shoe we would fit. An early walker does better in soft leather, a flexible sole and a strap that stays done up. Canvas can be a fair casual shoe later, once he is running about in ordinary children’s sizes. If you are still in first shoes, start with shoes for toddlers.
Sometimes, and only in the form the school describes. A plain black lace-up might pass where a coloured pump will not. Check the written list, including any note about logos and soles. We fit within that list. We will not guess it for you.
They are light, they pack flat, and many boys find them easy to get on. They also wet through, hold creases, and offer less structure than leather. A thin sole can feel harsh on a long walk. The best canvas shoes for boys are the ones that still hold the heel after a term, not the lightest pair in the box.
It is a children’s size, not an age. Two boys who both “take a 4” can need different lengths once we measure in centimetres, and Start-Rite and Clarks do not always agree with each other. Bring him in. The number on the old pair is only a clue.
